Opatija has a quieter kind of charm in the rain. The Lungomare empties, the sea turns grey-green and the old villas in the parks look even more romantic. Still, when the downpour goes on for hours, everyone asks the same question: now what?
The good news is that a rainy day in Opatija can turn into one of the best days of your trip. Everything you need is either in Opatija itself or in Rijeka, just a 15-minute drive away. Here are five ideas we love ourselves, plus a few small bonuses. Save this guide, because on the Kvarner coast you will probably need it more than once.
If you want to know how Opatija became an elegant European health resort, start here. Villa Angiolina is the place where tourism in Opatija literally began, and the new permanent exhibition “Villa Angiolina – the Story of Opatija” tells that story in a modern, interactive way. The villa itself, with its frescoes, mosaics and gilded mirrors, is worth the visit on its own.
A few steps away, next to St James’ Church, you will find the Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion. It was built in 1900 as the Gerbeaud pastry shop, where fresh cakes arrived daily by train from Vienna. Today it is the town’s main exhibition space, with exhibitions that change regularly.
Peek&Poke is Croatia’s first computer museum and a great pick for a rainy day in Rijeka. Right next to it is the Museum of Childhood, with more than 600 exhibits and a toy dating back to 1900. Honestly, parents have at least as much fun here as their kids, because everyone finds a toy from their own childhood.
The Astronomical Centre is the first and only place in Croatia that combines an observatory and a planetarium. Under its 8-metre dome, space is projected all around you, and the rain outside is quickly forgotten. On your way out, step onto the terrace for one of the most beautiful views of the Kvarner Bay.

Still hungry for culture? Rijeka also has the City Museum in the Sugar Palace, the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. To learn more about Opatija’s own cultural scene, read our guide to the art and culture of Opatija.
Art-kino on Krešimirova Street is Rijeka’s only city cinema, with a programme very different from the multiplex. Alongside new releases, it shows European and independent films, classics and themed series. Films are screened in their original language with subtitles, so it works well for international guests too.
If you would rather slow down, Rijeka City Library is one of the cosiest places to spend a rainy afternoon. It has a huge collection of Croatian and foreign books, a PlayStation 5 and music rooms where you can play instruments by appointment. Cinema and library together make a perfect plan for a rainy day in Rijeka.

This is our favourite idea for couples, friends and birthdays. At Art Bottega, close to Rijeka’s centre, a professional artist guides you step by step through your first canvas while you sip as much local wine as you like. No experience is needed and all materials are included.
The workshop lasts about two and a half to three hours and has nothing to do with art school, it is all about fun and good company. The best part is that you take your painting home as a souvenir no one else has. Booking ahead is required.

Opatija has been known as a health resort since the late 19th century, so a spa in Opatija is almost a tradition. A rainy day in Opatija is the perfect excuse for a sauna, warm water and a massage, and several centres welcome guests who are not staying at the hotel.
Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa sits by the sea right at the entrance to Rijeka, coming from Opatija. The resort sells day passes, so you can enjoy the spa without staying overnight, and treatments are booked on site.
Keight Wellness & Spa in central Opatija has the largest indoor pool in town, 25 metres long, plus a Finnish and an infrared sauna. External guests can buy a day pass and book treatments on top.
Thalasso Wellness Centre Opatija is part of Thalassotherapia, an institution with a long tradition of health tourism. Expect a semi-Olympic pool with heated seawater, four types of sauna and medical wellness programmes.

When the rain keeps going into the evening, dress up and go to the theatre. Rijeka’s national theatre sits in a lavish building from 1885, designed by the famous Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer, with ceiling paintings by, among others, Gustav and Ernst Klimt. The building alone is worth the night out.
For international guests, opera and ballet are the best choice, since music and dance need no translation. The repertoire changes through the season, so check it on the theatre’s website.
The cafés in Opatija keep the town’s Viennese spirit alive, and a rainy afternoon is made for a long coffee and a slice of cake. Café Wagner at Hotel Milenij is a classic Viennese-style café overlooking the Lungomare, known for its creamy cakes. Caffe Continental is one of the oldest cafés in Opatija, with homemade strudel and other sweets. Café Strauss at Hotel Palace Bellevue carries the atmosphere of old Opatija, and chocolate lovers should not miss Milenij Choco World, a small chocolate lab making its own pralines.
A fun fact to finish: the famous Gerbeaud cake, a layered walnut and apricot slice loved across Central Europe, is named after Emil Gerbeaud, the same confectioner behind the old pastry shop in today’s Šporer Pavilion. The cafés in Opatija come with history, not just good cake.

Rijeka has several escape rooms, a great choice for families with kids and groups of friends. An hour of puzzles and the rainy day flies by.
A rainy evening is best with a great dinner. You will find our tips in our guide to wine & dine evenings in Opatija.
A rainy day in Opatija is not a lost holiday day, it is a chance to see another side of Kvarner. Museums, cinema, painting with wine, spa days and theatre are all within 15 minutes, and the cafés in Opatija are just around the corner.
