Summer in Opatija is beautiful — lively, sunny, and full of energy, and it’s a season we truly love. But more and more guests are discovering another side of the town: September, when everything is a little calmer and more relaxed. Instead of pushing through crowds on the Lungomare, you get the chance to explore the town and its surroundings at your own pace. In this guide, we cover all the reasons why September is a special time to visit Opatija: from the weather, to local festivals, to the gastronomy and nature that show a different side of themselves during this period.
One of the biggest reasons to visit Kvarner in September is simply — peace and quiet. The school year has started, families with children have mostly gone home, so the town is mostly walked by couples, older guests, and travelers looking for a slower pace. Restaurants are easier to book, promenades aren’t packed, and you can usually find a spot on the beach without any trouble.
September and October are also a great time to book accommodation. Availability is higher, and it’s easier to plan your stay without worrying whether there will be a free slot.

The summer months bring the peak of the season, sunshine, and high temperatures that many guests are specifically looking for. September, on the other hand, offers a slightly milder but equally pleasant version — daytime temperatures usually range between 25 and 30°C, warm enough to enjoy the sun, yet mild enough for longer walks around town without the heat getting in the way.
And the sea? It stays warm from the whole summer — the average sea temperature in September along this part of the Adriatic is still around 23°C, so swimming remains quite pleasant right through to the end of the month.
Autumn in Kvarner isn’t just a quieter time to unwind, it’s also a period when the region comes alive through numerous events that combine tradition, culture, and good fun.

Every first Sunday in October, nearby Kastav celebrates the start of autumn and new wine with Bela Nedeja — an event whose tradition dates back to the 15th century. Alongside stalls selling traditional products, crafts, and of course Belica wine, visitors can expect a rich cultural and entertainment program that captures the spirit of the Kastav region.
Neighboring Viškovo traditionally hosts Matejna, another event that preserves the cultural heritage of the area and is part of Kvarner’s rich autumn tradition. The event runs for a whole week, featuring sports, cultural, and entertainment content, children’s workshops and storytelling sessions, and opens with the Halubje Trail, a race through the landscape and flavors of Halubje. Numerous local associations and clubs take part in organizing it, so the program offers something for every age and interest.

This year Kvarner holds the title of European Region of Gastronomy, making autumn the perfect time to explore the region’s food scene. The grape harvest, new wine, and truffle season give restaurants and small family farms (OPGs) good reason to offer visitors the very best the region has to offer — from local manеštra stew and prosciutto, to freshly caught fish and dishes made with seasonal ingredients. Opatija has been building its tourism story since the 19th century as a winter climate resort, and that spirit of wellness and recreation is still alive today. Throughout autumn, the town regularly organizes sports activities and educational workshops focused on a healthy, active lifestyle, making an autumn stay a great opportunity to combine rest with self-care.

The well-known Lungomare, the long seaside promenade, becomes even more pleasant for longer walks without the crowds in autumn. From Opatija, it’s easy to reach Kostrena, Lovran, or Trsat — each of these places offers its own version of a quiet autumn walk along the sea or through historic streets.
For those who’d like to trade the sea for the mountains, Učka offers stunning views over the whole Kvarner Bay, and the autumn colors make a walk through Kastav Forest especially picturesque.
September in Opatija offers the best of everything — pleasant weather, warm sea, a rich cultural calendar, and gastronomy at its peak, all without the summer crowds. If you’re thinking about a getaway that’s just as relaxing as it is eventful, autumn is the right time to visit Opatija and its surroundings.
Autumn is a favorite season for active-holiday lovers — the region hosts a number of cycling and trail races during these months, from coastal routes to more demanding trails inland, making Kvarner an increasingly recognized destination for sports tourism.
Everything is within easy reach if you choose to stay in Opatija itself!
