The tradition begins with Antonja, the first sign that the city is entering the carnival period, followed by the symbolic handover of the City Key to the masked groups and the election of the Queen of the Rijeka Carnival, announcing the start of the main events. During this time, the entire city lives in the spirit of carnival, with streets, squares, and promenades filled with colour, music, and costumed masks. This event brings together thousands of people of all generations, from the youngest to the oldest, offering an opportunity for creative expression and shared enjoyment.
