Perched between the blue of the Adriatic and the green of inland Istria, Učka Nature Park is a breathtaking mountain oasis just above Opatija. This magnificent park offers visitors a rare blend of untouched nature, rich biodiversity, and spectacular panoramic views. Whether you’re a passionate hiker, a cycling enthusiast, or simply a traveler looking to reconnect with nature, Učka will win you over with its authenticity and beauty. In this blog, we’ll take you through its landscapes, activities, wildlife, and the charming spots that make it one of Croatia’s hidden gems.
Učka Nature Park stretches across 160 square kilometers, encompassing the Učka mountain range and part of the Ćićarija plateau. It is the highest mountain in Istria, with Vojak peak reaching 1,401 meters above sea level. From here, the views are nothing short of spectacular — on clear days, you can see the entire Kvarner Bay, Istria, and even the distant Alps.
Beyond its natural beauty, Učka is also rich in cultural heritage. Scattered across the park are small stone villages where time seems to stand still — places like Mala Učka or Vela Učka reflect the traditional mountain lifestyle of past centuries. Dry-stone walls, old sheepfolds, and ancient paths reveal how humans and nature have coexisted here in harmony for generations.
From Opatija, it takes only 30 minutes by car to reach Vela Učka. We recommend checking out our accommodation offer while you’re exploring our region.
For outdoor lovers, Učka is a playground of possibilities. More than 50 kilometers of marked hiking trails lead through forests, meadows, and rocky ridges, offering routes for every skill level. The most popular path climbs from Poklon Pass to the Vojak peak, where a stone observation tower rewards visitors with unforgettable 360° views.
Cyclists will also find plenty of routes, from gentle rides through forested valleys to challenging mountain trails that test endurance and skill. Rock climbers can explore natural cliffs around Vela Draga canyon, a stunning geomorphological site famous for its tall limestone towers. And for the more adventurous, Učka is also one of Croatia’s top paragliding spots — launching from Vojak or Brgud lets you glide over the Adriatic with breathtaking views of the coastline below.
Učka’s diverse landscape — from dense forests and pastures to karst terrain — supports a remarkable variety of plants and animals. The park is home to over 1,300 plant species, including the endemic Učka bellflower (Campanula tommasiniana), which grows only here and nowhere else in the world. The mountain forests are dominated by chestnut, beech, and oak trees, creating a vibrant palette that changes with the seasons.
Wildlife lovers might spot roe deer, foxes, wild boars, or even golden eagles soaring high above the cliffs. The park is also an important habitat for many bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. With its pristine environment and low human impact, Učka remains a refuge for species that have disappeared elsewhere in the region.
Besides its natural wonders, Učka offers numerous picnic areas, lookout points, and mountain shelters. The Vojak tower is a must-visit landmark — built at the beginning of the 20th century, it now serves as a viewpoint and small exhibition space. The Poklon Visitor Centre, located at 922 meters above sea level, is another highlight, providing interactive displays, a café, and a panoramic terrace.
For those who wish to explore further, nearby villages like Lovranska Draga, Mala Učka, and Brgud invite visitors to experience traditional Istrian mountain culture. Don’t miss the hiking path “Slap” near Lovranska Draga, leading to a picturesque waterfall hidden in the forest — a perfect stop for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.
Učka Nature Park is more than a mountain — it’s a living connection between sea and sky, tradition and wilderness. Whether you’re here for an adventure or just to enjoy the peace of nature, Učka will leave you inspired and longing to return.
