Read MoreIf you’re planning a sun-soaked getaway along the Kvarner coast with your furry friend, you’re lucky! Croatia is remarkably pet-friendly, and the scenic Kvarner region offers several great beaches where dogs are not just tolerated—they’re celebrated. In this guide, I’ll walk you through some top dog-friendly spots—from Monty’s Dog Beach in Crikvenica to hidden gems on Krk Island and beyond—so you and your pup can enjoy a pawsome Adriatic adventure.
Mont’s Dog Beach & Bar is located about 45 kilometers from Opatija, or a 40-minute drive, this pebbly beach features designated dog-friendly areas, showers, water bowls, even a dog menu and an agility park—truly a paradise for pets. Dogs are allowed off-leash, and there are also sunbeds, umbrellas, and a café/bar for their owners. Every summer, this beach hosts a swimming and running competition for dogs and their owners, attracting numerous tourists, while locals simply adore the event. They also host Paint & Wine events for the owners while dogs are enjoying playing on the beach.
This small, natural rocky beach, about 60 meters long, is located just under 30 kilometers from Opatija, around a 30-minute drive. It offers minimal facilities— fence, cafés and bars are very close to the beach, and no shade—but has easy access and beautiful surrounding cliffs. It is popular with dog owners looking for a quiet swimming spot. The beach offers a beautiful view of the Krk Bridge, Krk Island, and Cres. It is one of the most beloved spots among locals and their furry friends.
In Rijeka’s Kantrida neighborhood, about 8 kilometers or 12 minutes (of there’s no traffic) from Opatija, you’ll find a designated dog beach. This beach is fenced and quite popular. Due to the large number of owners and dogs, it can feel rather small. It features a mix of small and large stones with easy access to the sea. Kantrida is generally known for sports and sporting activities, as well as its football stadium.
Just 5 kilometers, or about a 17-minute drive from Opatija, Lovran offers a small dog-friendly spot along the Lungomare promenade. It’s a charming pebble area without dedicated facilities, perfect for a quick swim and seaside stroll. The positive side of this dog beach is that it’s located in a cove, where you can often find shade. The beach is fenced, so you don’t have to worry about your dog wandering off. There are no additional amenities on the beach itself, but nearby you’ll find a shop on the main road and cafés/bars accessible via the famous promenade. I have to praise the Lungomare here, as every few meters you can find free bags for picking up your pet’s waste, as well as trash bins for disposal.
This peaceful pebble beach lies in a quiet cove, about 15 kilometers or a 25-minute drive from Opatija. The drive to the beach is simply enchanting—gentle curves along the sea, passing through charming small towns. Be sure to roll down the windows so both you and your furry friend can soak in all the scents. There is no dedicated dog-beach signage, so it’s best to bring water and some shade. It’s ideal for a relaxing outing with your dog in a calm setting. Check out our property selection in Opatija and Ičići if you haven’t booked your stay in our area yet.
Kvarner is a real treat for dog-loving travelers! Before heading out, double-check parking, if the beach is fenced, shade availability, and bring water, waste bags, and perhaps a towel. Wherever you go, your four-legged companion is sure to fall in love with Croatia’s Adriatic charm—just like the rest of us! Have a tail-wagging stay!
